Horse needs help from giving community
Vegas ran across the field following Amy Simmons, his light brown mane blowing softly in the wind.
Awakened from a mid-afternoon nap, Vegas was more than willing to come in for an afternoon snack.
He trusted Simmons and knew she wished him no harm.
He frolicked across the field with a grace and beauty that never betrayed the truth of his illness or impending death.
The sad story of the majestic beast is one that will draw a tear to any reader’s eye.

Vegas was recently diagnosed with eye cancer and needs a $450 surgery. It is a surgery that will remove Vegas’ entire eye, but will also give the horse a new lease on life. Otherwise, he will not live more than six months.

Simmons, owner of Stitches from Above, met Vegas a few months ago while horseback riding with a friend from church.

Noticing Vegas had what appeared to by an eye infection, Simmons asked if the horse was sick.

Learning later Vegas had cancer, Simmons knew she wanted to help.

Simmons is hoping to raise the money for the surgery and save Vegas’s life with the help of the community—a community the Ohio native has heard is willing to help others in their time of need.

Using her mastered skill of embroidery, Simmons has designed the “Spirit of the Horse.” The embroidered and framed wall art is being raffled off for $1 tickets and will be given away Dec.23. Only 450 tickets are being sold. All proceeds will be used to provide Vegas with the life-saving surgery the horse needs.

“I think a lot of people like to help and are willing to help if they know what needs are out there,” said Simmons.

Simmons is also hopeful word of Vegas’s condition might also spread and, if possible, there might be a way to not only save Vegas’s life, but also save Vegas’s eye.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at www.StitchesFromAbove.com or at Broken H Western Barn on Highway 27 in Enterprise.

The “Spirit of the Horse” will be given away at 4 p.m. at Broken H Western Barn Dec. 23.
